British Trade Dollar - Hong Kong, minted 1912

Opium War, started by Britain against China in 1840, when China tried to stop Britain from selling opium to its citizen. China was defeated and had to open up a number of ports to British trade, and ceded Hong Kong to Britain.

The coin was accepted as a medium of exchange in Hong Kong then. On the obverse, Britannia standing on shore, holding a trident in one hand and balancing a British shield in the other, with a merchant ship under full sail in the background.


Old Supreme Court Building in Central was opened on 15 January 1912, by the fourteenth Governor of the colonized Hong Kong.
